Singing along with heartfelt lyrics and banging your head to your preferred bands is always a sure-fire way to turn your bad mood around. Humming your favorite tunes while working makes long days pass by quickly.
Listening to music is one of the best ways to express emotions and relax yourself. But that relaxation turns into anxiety and chaos if your music selection isn’t appropriately organized for you to choose your preferred song from a list and start enjoying it.
According to NYTimes, there are several ways through which you organize and move your music files from one place to another. The ways differ when you are using different operating systems. If, however, you are a MacBook user, these pointers mentioned below will help you organize your music in the best ways possible.
Quick view
Add Your Music Folder To Your Favorite Sidebar
Apple doesn’t put its “Music” folder in your Finder’s Favorites sidebar by default anymore. To find your music folder lost somewhere in your Mac and add it to your Favorites sidebar again,
- Click the Finder icon in your Dock.
- Select “Go” in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Then select “Home.” You can also press Shift+Command+H on your keyboard.
- Your “Home” folder will open in Finder, and you’ll see the “Music” folder listed there. Double-click to open it.
- Now, click and drag the music icon into the “Favorites” section of your sidebar.
Change Import Settings
Depending on where you import your songs, the file format or other settings of all your songs might not be the same.
- Choose music> Preferences.
- Click Files, then choose Import Settings.
- Choose an encoding format such as AAC or MP3 Encoder. Choose one of the preset settings or create your custom settings depending on that format.
Your Mac converts the music files into AAC format by default, but you can choose a different encoding option, including AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3 and WAV. To learn how to convert your music files from one format to another, click setapp.com.
Sort Apple Music Albums On Mac
To sort all albums on your Mac by Artist and year:
- Open the Music app from the Mac dock.
- Click Albums under Library on the left side of the screen.
- Click View on the Music toolbar.
- Select Show View Options.
- Click on Sort by under View Options and choose Artist.
- Select Year next to Then under View Options.
- Close the View Options window.
Change Where Imported Music Files Are Stored
By default, MacBook stores your music files under the Music folder on your computer. But, if you prefer to change where you import your music files to,
- In the Music app on your Mac, choose music, then Preferences, and click Files.
- Click Change, then select a new location for your files.
After this, new songs and other items you import are stored in the new location. Please keep in mind songs you have already imported stay in their current location only.
To go back to storing imported files in the default folder:
- Choose Music.
- Select Preferences.
- Click Files.
- Next, select Reset.
Consolidate Your Music Library Files
It will be easier for you to move your music library to a new Mac if you consolidate all the files in your library in the Music folder. In the Music app on your Mac,
- Choose File > Library > Organize Library.
- Select “Consolidate files”.
This feature keeps files in their original locations and makes copies, which are placed in the default folder.
Reduce Duplicate Files
When you add an item on your computer to your library, music places a copy of the file in your Music folder while the original file remains in its current location. Hold down the Option key while dragging files to the Music window to temporarily reverse this setting. You can also reduce this duplication by adding files only to your library and not the Music folder. This also helps if you prefer to store files on an external disk but still want to view them in music. In the Music app on your Mac,
- Choose music > Preferences, then click Files.
- Untick the checkbox next to “Copy files to Music Media folder when adding to library.”
Find A Particular Song
To find a particular song that seems to have disappeared from your music library,
- In the Finder, choose file > Find.
- Then search for the song by its title or Artist.
- You can search for “MP4” to find files downloaded from the iTunes Store or “MP3” to find songs encoded in MP3 format.
- When you find the particular file, drag it to the Music window to add the song to music again.
These tips will help you organize the music world in your Mac better so that no form of anxiety may dare interrupt your musical tranquility.
